How Zippers are Made | Raw Materials, Manufacturing and Quality Control

Zippers or AKA clasp locker are devices that are used to have a binding to a fabric, or things that need it, for example, bags, camping gears, sports goodies, etc. They provide temporary closure to an opening that we use to save our things. The zippers are also a common thing in the garment industry where it is used in jeans, jackets and other garments and also used as a show material wherein there is actually no opening, just a zipper makes the style look cool. Zippers come in variable sizes, shapes, colors and are used universally! With this, we think the topic of How High Heels Are Made | History, Raw Materials, and Manufacturing will also interest you!

Raw Materials

At the core, zippers have the following items that make up its assembly

  • A stringer– a tape with teeth compilation that makes a side of the zipper
  • A slider– for opening and closing the zipper
  • A tab– with help of with the slider is moved back and forth
  • A stopper– to stop the end of the slider at the end of when two stringers meet so that the slider does not slide out.

Types Of Materials Used To Make A Zipper

There are three types of materials or zippers at large that are made

  • Metal Chain
  • Molded Plastic Chain
  • Coil (Nylon) Chain

Metal Chain

These zippers were the ones that were made at the inception of the zippers back in 1893. There are various types available in them as well, which are aluminum, Brass, Antique Brass, Black Oxidized.

Molded Plastic Chain

These zippers are one of the best-used zippers in the fashion industry and many heavy-duty products. Also, these are used in camping tents and other outdoor good. The teeth of this zipper are directly molded on the stringers tape. As they are plastic, the resins used for it are heavy duty. Coil (Nylon) Chain

Being versatile, these zippers are used on a very larger scale in almost every place where one can find zippers. This zipper’s teeth are of extruded plastic, which is sewn on the tape.

The Manufacturing Process

How Zippers are Made

As we discussed above the type of the zippers, here we see how the plastic and metal zippers are made. Although they work similarly, the manufacturing, however, is different. And here is All about Tie Bars and How to Pair Them with Ties!

The Metal Zipper

For these zippers, two methods are used which we have discussed below

Method 1:

In this process, round wire is made to go through a rolling mill so that it has a Y-shape. Then the wire is sliced so that the size is desirable as per the requirement of the zipper. Then with the die, it is tooth is punched passing through a rotating table’s slot. Further, this turntable is rotated to a 90-degree angle and this process is repeated. After this, the first tooth is now clamped to the stringers cloth. It is necessary that the tape rises over the scoop at least twice so that there is room created of a tooth on the opposite side to complete the zipper.

Method 2:

In this method, the molten metal is used to make the teeth of the zipper. Here a mold whose shape is like the teeth is clamped around the zipper’s tape and then, molten zinc is supplied into it under high pressure. Then water cools it down are the teeth are released. If there exists any residue, then it is trimmed. And for those who crave fashion, here are Pictures of Hot Women in Short Dresses.

The Plastic Zipper

As for the plastic zipper, here are the method that is used to make spiral zippers

Method 1:

In this method, the round plastic wire is notched before it is fed in between two screws. These screws rotate opposite to each other and pull the wire in spiral form. Then the head makers form it into round knobs that are cooled downed by air. This happens in two different machines; however, it is simultaneous so that there is no mismatch. Method 2:

In this method, everything happens simultaneously but in the same machine. Therefore, this method makes zippers in already linked form. Being looped twice between the notches, a wire is passed on a rotating forming wheel. There are a pusher and a head maker that simultaneously press through the plastic wire to form heads. Quality Control

Measures of quality control

The goal of the manufacturer is to have a good quality smooth functioning zipper that is durable and reliable. Every part of a zipper starting from the length to its width and functioning is done by the scrutiny that checks to see whether the zipper falls in range. A zipper should be

  • Flat And Straight
  • Strong
  • Easy to use

To check the flatness and straightness, the zipper is subjected to gauge that is kept above it to a certain height. If the gauge touches the zipper multiple times, the zipper is faulty.

The check the strength of the zipper, a tensile test is done where a hook is attached to the teeth of the zipper and then pulled. There is a gauge that measures whether at force will the tooth come out.

To check the ease of use, the zippers are again out to a tensile testing matching which pulls the zipper to see how it comes down
