Easter or Resurrection Sunday is the celebration of the resurrection on the third day from the death of Lord Jesus after his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary. The week before the Easter is known as “Holy Week” that celebrates Easter Triduum, Good Friday and Easter commemorating the death and crucifixion of Jesus. It doesn’t fall on one specific date like other holidays.
According to the Western Churches who follow Gregorian Calendar, Easter is celebrated on first Sunday following Full Moon after vernal equinox on March 21st. So it basically varies between March 22 to April 25 every year. Whereas some Christians use Julian Calendar and celebrate Easter a week or two after Western Christians.
Easter Jesus Risen Scriptures for Inspiration
Lent is a season of forty days, excluding Sundays, from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday which represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness. Lent is a time of doing penance, prayers, fasting, repentance of sins and preparing for upcoming Easter. Sundays are not included as Sunday represents a “Mini Easter”. Many Christians give up their luxury and fast in Lent in order to replicate Jesus’s sacrifices.
The specific origin of word “Easter” is not derived. Some sources believe that “Easter” means Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility. Other sources say Easter is derived from Latin word Hebdomada Alba which means a white week, and white clothing is worn by people who were baptized at that time. Easter also appears from German word esostarum. Easter is also known as Pascua in Spanish.
When we think about Easter, easter bunny and easter eggs always come to our mind. Hare is an ancient symbol used for Moon, and as we know the date of Easter depends on Full Moon, this is how hare comes to mind. Also, Easter is all about spring & new life. Hare produces many offsprings. This is how easter bunny came into the picture. In many Ancient cultures an egg is a symbol of new life. And Easter is about new life and celebration. Thus, easter egg is given as a gift to friends and relatives on Easter. In some cultures, it is also a good sign of rebirth.
Easter is a religious holiday for Christians, they go the church to attend Easter services, read Easter story in bible and discuss Jesus sacrifices, and have Easter Brunch with their families. Whereas kids participate in egg painting, Easter basket filled with goods and bunny making competitions and candies are distributed among kids.
